I’ve wanted to climb Mt Washington in the winter for almost a decade now, ever since I first hiked in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. In the summer, it’s easy to reach by car up the long auto-road, but in winter it’s quite another journey: above the treeline in the Whites is a truly special place, scoured by strong winds, dotted with boulders, and subject to rapidly changing weather and visibility.
“I can’t wait to be in one of your long facebook posts! exclaimed Katie as we drove south to Hochfügen, anxiously scanning the peaks around for any signs of snow. Well, tighten your boot buckles and put your skis into downhill mode, here we go!
A windy, wintry, snowy hike to Notkarspitze. Originally planned for five people, two buddies dropped out before the hike, leaving us as myself, Alex and Johanna.
An incredible weekend skit touring in Zillertal and my first time! Many thanks to Munan “Try turning” Gong and Kedron “It’s not that steep” Silsbee for your patience and encouragement!
A mid-week jaunt up Pleisenspitze with Andy. This was my first hike in Munich when I arrived in March , and it’s an easy way to gain some serious height and use public transport.
A great hike in the still snow mountains between Bavarian and Tyrol – we hiked along a ridge to Halserspitz, and then tackled the descent over the steep snow fields.
More photos A lovely hike with some lovely people. The weather forecast looked foul, with heavy rain or snow forecast.…
An excellent snow shoe tour up Kramerspitzchen, a little peak we “discovered” whilst trying to reach Kramerspitz.
A lovely hike with some lovely people. Imre guided us without any miss steps along a great route, with a snowy ridge and an excellent hut at the far end.
A glorious trip up above Peterskopfl and towards Pyramidenspitze! We’d hoped to do this route last weekend, but we decided against it due to the high avalanche risk. This weekend was a perfect chance to have a crack at it, with wonderful weather, low avalanche risk and good company.
